To realize our mission and vision for the future, LMH is embarking on a $40 million campus expansion. The goal of this capital campaign is to raise a minimum of $8 million toward that effort.

Why has LMH launched this campaign?
Aging Facilities. Some of the facilities at Lawrence Memorial Hospital date back to the 1960s. While most have been updated, we still need to expand and enhance numerous areas in order to meet the expectations of our patients and their families.
Advances in Technology. Technological advancements result in less-invasive therapies and improved diagnostics. LMH is committed to bringing our patients the most advanced treatments and the best technology available.
Population Growth and Aging. Between 1990 and 2000, the population of Douglas County increased 21.6%, while that of Kansas rose 8.3%. In Douglas County, 7.9% of the population is over 65. This stress upon the delivery of health care will increase with the rapid rise in population.
Challenges to Financial Support. With expenses accelerating faster than inflation and labor scarcity driving up nursing and technologist salaries, resources that were once taken for granted are now in short supply.
No Tax Support. LMHEA receives no tax support from Lawrence or Douglas County. Without tax dollars to support our operations, LMH faces a host of challenges in the next several years and for the future.

How will the funds be used?
Financial support is needed to address four core areas:
Enhancement of Birthing Rooms. With a growing community, our children hold a very special place in our hearts, and we want to do everything we can to give them a healthy start. Funding will meet this challenge through an expansion that will allow for a more nurturing environment for mothers and their babies.
New and Improved Emergency Department. Given the increased volume of patients admitted to the Lawrence Memorial Hospital emergency department, issues ranging from privacy to delivery of care become critical. The number of patients increased from 15,000 in 2000 to nearly 30,000 in 2004. LMH will meet these critical needs with a new emergency department which will emphasize privacy and the delivery of quality care.
Modernization and Expansion of Surgical Facilities. Surgical trends are favoring higher levels of sophistication, both in terms of technology and resources. To prepare for these changes, and to continue to attract and retain the quality surgeons needed by this community, LMH must provide a state-of-the-art surgical facility.
An All Private Room Environment. Quality inpatient care demands comfortable, private facilities for patients that they can rely upon in the healing process. These rooms will afford family comfort within a private, intimate setting.

Written intentions reinforce the integrity of the campaign, avoid misunderstandings and comply with accepted accounting practices.

How will subsequent payments be made?

What is the economic impact of LMH?
The health care sector accounts for an estimated 6% of total employment in Douglas County, or about 3,880 jobs. LMH is a significant driver of health care services and contributes substantially to the economic development. The result is a “ripple effect” for the entire region:
• Each job created in the health sector creates additional employment in the county. As a consequence, the direct impact of 935 LMH full-time employees results in an indirect impact of 650 additional jobs in the county.
• Each dollar of earned income in the health sector creates additional income in the county. In 2003, a $35 million LMH payroll resulted in an additional $15 million income impact in Douglas County.
