30th Annual Penny Jones Golf Tournament will be the biggest ever

More than 350 golfers are anticipated to play in the 30th annual Penny Jones Open golf tournament on Friday Sept. 9 at Alvamar Golf and Country Club. Proceeds from the tournament will go to the Lawrence Memorial Hospital Endowment Association to enhance the quality of healthcare in Douglas County.

The goal this year is to raise $110,000 in net proceeds. Proceeds will fund items such as an orthopedic saw and drill system, patient beds, artwork, a cordless fetal transducer and a blood bank freezer.

Participants in the tournament can choose either a morning or afternoon tee time. This year, for the first time, there will be a true shotgun start at both tee times. The entry fee is $175 per player and includes golf, cart, putting contest, on-course skill prizes, tournament gift, refreshments and award ceremony. Participants can sign up as an individual or as part of a team. Morning play begins at 8 a.m. and afternoon play at 1:15 p.m.

“The Penny Jones tournament is one of the best tournaments in the region,” said Mark Gonzales, Penny Jones Golf Tournament co-chair. “It is a great way for the community to come out and support quality healthcare in Douglas County.”

Dr. H.P. “Penny” Jones was a prominent member of the Lawrence medical community for more than 60 years and was well known in Kansas golf circles. He used his love of sports to promote healthy lifestyles, and the annual golf tournament held in his honor is entering its 30th year of success. Dr. Jones served thousands of families and was well respected by his peers. He practiced medicine until he retired in 1986 at the age of 80 and died in January 1997. This past year, Penny’s daughter, Joanne Jones Vogt, passed away and her memorial funds are benefitting the Penny Jones golf tournament.

Major sponsors of the 2011 Penny Jones Open golf tournament include Commerce Bank, P1 Group, Inc., Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, JE Dunn, and Willis.
