Applications available for wellness grants in Eudora, Baldwin City and Tonganoxie

This year, the eighth annual Lawrence Memorial Hospital Summer Spray 5K run/walk series has reached a record number of walkers and runners in three community races.

Each event included fun water features throughout the course while physicians from Baldwin City, Tonganoxie and Eudora educated participants on the importance of healthy lifestyle choices. The event sponsor for 2016 Summer Spray 5K was Briggs Auto.

Now that the races are complete, three LMH Summer Spray 5K Community Wellness Grants will be awarded -- in each of three communities. The grants can be used for programs or projects that effectively and resourcefully enhance local health and wellness. Each community is eligible for up to $2,500 and there may be multiple winners. Applications will be accepted through August, and awards will begin in September.

Past recipients have included Baker University for on-site lab testing, and equipment in the elementary school. The city of Eudora received a grant for healthy snacks for their summer campers and before- and after-school programs. Tonganoxie received a grant for school physicals for middle and high school students.

“We are proud to partner in the Eudora, Tonganoxie and Baldwin City communities and reinforce growth of health awareness,” said Kathy Clausing-Willis, vice president and chief development officer for LMH. “We hope the Summer Spray series inspires people and their families to make a healthy lifestyle a priority. As a 100 Top hospital for four years in a row, our emphasis is increasingly to keep you healthy, and these grants provide some of the means for the community programs to make that happen.”
