Money-Saving Grocery Shopping Tips

We are all looking for ways to save. Try these next time you are in the grocery store.

  • Before you shop, check store flyers to look for nutritious foods and ingredients that are on sale.

  • Also clip and use coupons, look for items that are on sale, or use supermarket discount cards.

  • Buy skim milk powder. Skim milk powder is considerably less expensive than regular milk and is easy to store. Use it for sauces, casseroles, soups, mashed potatoes and other dishes. You can also use it to make milk to drink.

  • Buy cheaper cuts of meat and marinate them or cook them at a lower temperature for longer.

  • Share meal preparation and ingredient costs with friends. This can save money and be fun. For instance, you might plan a potluck dinner with neighbors. You might also buy ingredients and cook with a friend.

  • Avoid convenience foods like frozen dinners, prepared sandwiches or boxed foods. These are often more expensive and less healthy than preparing the same items yourself. If you are strapped for time, cook on the weekend and freeze meals for the week ahead. You can also consider cooking items that make a lot of servings like soup or casseroles. These can last you a few days.

  • Plan meals ahead of time. It will allow you to take full advantage of ingredients. For example, if you are buying a dozen eggs for a cake, think about how you can utilize the remaining eggs for dinner, lunch or breakfast. Planning ahead also limits the amount of trips to the store, which will minimize impulse buying.

  • Don’t forget to look around. The most valuable real estate in the store is at eye level and this is where the worst deals are found. Looking high and low can help you locate store brands and bulk items.

  • Shop the perimeter of the store. This is where the baked goods, produce fish and meat and dairy items are located. These are not only better for you than the packaged foods in the center isles, they are actually less expensive.

  • Shop in bulk. You can often buy cereal, nuts, baking ingredients and spices in this section. Buying items this way will usually save you lots of money.
